You probably already know that we are wrapping up our kitchen renovation (don't worry, the reveal is coming SOON). Now that I have started to decorate the space, I've been working on all the details.

I've given thought to even little details like where we will put the napkins. Does that seem weird?! Here's the thing… now that we eat breakfast at our kitchen island, I don't just want to keep a stack of napkins out on the counter. That would feel messy to me. But I also don't want to keep them in a cabinet so that we have to fish them out every time. I know, it's a #firstworldproblem, but these are the things I think about because it's important to me that our kitchen functions super well for our every day needs.

I decided that a pretty napkin holder on our kitchen island would be our best option. So, I started my hunt for the perfect napkin holder. Guess what I found? NOTHING I liked. Everything I found online was bland and boring. And some were surprisingly expensive. #notinterested

So, that is how this colorful and simple DIY napkin holder was born! I made it myself one Saturday morning after giving up on finding one that I could buy.

Read on to learn how to make your own napkin holder. It's a simple and easy DIY that doesn't even require any power tools.

DIY Napkin Holder Tutorial

Materials needed:

  • DAP RapidFuse Wood Adhesive
  • 12 x 12 sheet of Balsa Wood (I recommend 3mm thickness–it will be easier to cut)
  • Paint in any colors you like
  • Paint brushes
  • Craft knife or utility knife
  • Straight edge or ruler
  • Self-healing cutting mat

Steps:

Step 1: Choose the shape for your napkin holder and create a template.

First, you need to choose a shape for your DIY napkin holder. I chose a hexagon shape and cut it out of some chipboard I had on hand, but plain paper would work fine! I sized it to be just a bit smaller than the 6 x 6 napkins we use.

Step 2: Trace the cuts you need to make on to your balsa wood.

Next, trace the cuts you need to make onto your wood.

I knew I needed two hexagon shapes to form the front and back of my napkin holder. And I also needed a rectangle to form the bottom of my napkin holder. I made the rectangle the same length as the bottom of the hexagon sides and made it 2 inches wide to accommodate a 2 inch stack of napkins at a time.

So, I traced two hexagons and 1 rectangle onto my balsa wood.

Step 3: Cut out your pieces.

After I finished tracing what I needed to, I used my craft knife, plastic ruler and self-healing cutting mat to make my cuts. Don't try to cut through the wood on your first pass. It's better to make multiple passes until your knife cuts all the way through the wood. I used my ruler to keep my first couple of passes straight–after that, my knife fit into the groove that had already been made so I didn't have to worry about it any more.

Step 4: Paint the pieces of your napkin holder.

Now it's time to paint! I painted all of the pieces of my napkin holder solid white first. Then I added colorful brushstrokes with some acrylic paint leftover from my DIY marbled Christmas ornaments. Paint yours however you want!

Step 5: Assemble your napkin holder.

I used my DAP RapidFuse Wood Adhesive to assemble all the pieces together. I attached the pieces one at a time. We use this stuff all the time because it works and it fuses so quickly (DUH–guess that's why they chose "RapidFuse" as the name). I held each piece in place for about 1 minute to allow it to set before moving on to the next piece.

That's it! I'm so happy with how this project turned out. I'm perfectly happy to have our napkins sitting out where we can easily reach them in this pretty napkin holder :)
